Why Is My Toilet Running?

If you hear water refilling when no one has flushed, you may have a running toilet. In addition to a continuous trickling or hissing sound, you may see water rippling in the bowl or notice a sudden spike in your utility bill. Identifying the cause of a running toilet is the first step toward choosing the right solution, conserving water, and protecting your plumbing system.

The Most Common Reasons a Toilet Keeps Running

Not sure why water is running in your toilet? Here’s what a plumber typically looks for when troubleshooting the issue:

  • Faulty flappers: When you flush, the rubber seal at the bottom of your tank is supposed to lift, allowing water to rush into the bowl. If the flapper becomes worn or damaged, it won’t drop back down to form a watertight seal, causing water to leak continuously from the tank into the bowl.
  • High water levels: Your float, often in the form of a ball or cup, signals the fill valve when to stop filling your toilet. When the float height is set too high, the fill valve may not shut off at the correct level, causing water to rise above the overflow tube and spill into the bowl.
  • Damaged fill valves: Connected to the float, a fill valve is designed to shut off automatically when the water reaches the correct level. When this part becomes clogged with debris, wears down, or breaks, it might fail to shut off the water supply.
  • Short or tangled chains: A chain connects the flush handle to the flapper. When the chain isn’t the right length or becomes tangled, the flapper can stay slightly open, causing a gap that leaks water.

What to Do When Your Toilet Won’t Stop Running

Whether your toilet runs continuously or only with each use, a professional plumber can perform a visual inspection of the tank to assess the water level and components such as the flapper, fill valves, and chain. A dye test can indicate whether the flapper is leaking and letting water escape from the tank.

Once the cause of the leak is confirmed, your plumber can explain the issue and give you up-front pricing. The fix may involve replacing worn or damaged parts. If your toilet is damaged, needs frequent repairs, or has aged significantly, you may need a replacement. Your plumber can walk you through your options and help you choose the right upgrade.
