Why Is My Water Bill So High?

You open your water bill and freeze. The number staring back at you is two or three times what you pay in a normal month. You rack your brain trying to figure out why. Skyrocketing water costs can range from increased usage to faulty appliances. Leaks are a leading cause of high water bills. While dripping faucets, running toilets, and burst pipes are easy to identify, some leaks are far sneakier. Those hidden underground or behind walls pour money down the drain before you realize there’s a problem.

Learn the most common reasons why your water bills are so high, which you can address yourself, and when to call a plumber.

Reasons for a High Water Bill

Understanding what might be causing your water usage spike is the first step toward solving the problem.

Here are the top culprits behind high water bills:

1. Running or Leaking Toilets
One drip per second from a faucet is 3,000 gallons of water per day

Toilets are one of the most common causes of water waste. A leaking toilet can waste around 300 gallons of water per day, which adds up fast when you calculate monthly costs. Worn flappers — the rubber or silicone valve at the bottom of the toilet tank — are often to blame. They cover the flush valve opening, sealing water inside the tank. An outdated or damaged flapper fails to seal, which can cause a leak.

2. Dripping Faucets or Showerheads

Small drips seem harmless until you do the math. One drip per second from a faucet wastes over 3,000 gallons per year, which equals around 180 showers’ worth of water. Showerheads that drip 10 times per minute lose around 500 gallons per year. Add all these minor drips together, and it amounts to significant water waste.

While a worn washer or loose pipe connection is easy enough to fix, more complex issues require a plumber’s expertise.

3. Other Plumbing Leaks

Water bill changes often come from invisible leaks. Water seeps behind walls, under floors, or into ceilings, where it remains unseen until signs of damage appear. Even after inspecting your entire property, you might not find an obvious source.

Under-sink drips in unused spaces like guest bathrooms or utility areas might go unnoticed for months. Appliance supply lines to your washer, dishwasher, or ice maker can develop slow drips. Even minor problems running around the clock waste hundreds of gallons each month before you spot the damage.

4. Water Meter Issues

These water meter variations can result in higher water bills:

  • Meter upgrades: Older meters degrade over time and often underreport water usage. When your utility provider replaces it with a new, accurate digital meter, your bill may spike.

  • Mechanical faults: Malfunctioning or outdated meters can overestimate your water usage, leading you to pay for more than you use.

  • Incorrect readings: Some bill changes can come from a reading or reporting error. Correcting readings or changing from an estimate to an actual reading may lead to higher costs.

If you suspect a problem with your water meter or reading, contact your utility for help.

5. Seasonal Changes or Guests

In times when you use more water, your bills will naturally increase. During hot Texas summers, you water your plants more often than in colder months. A typical sprinkler system uses 15 to 16 gallons per minute, which can stack up quicker than you realize. Filling up the pool or hot tub also adds to the bill.

Have house guests or kids home for the holidays? Water consumption increases when you have more people in the house. Take a moment to consider whether the sudden jump in water usage has a valid reason.

6. Faulty Appliances

When an appliance that uses water breaks, it can leak or use more water than usual, driving up costs. Here are the usual suspects:

  • Water heaters: Corrosion, loose drain valves, or cracked tanks can cause water to leak from your heater.
  • Refrigerators: The small plastic water lines connecting to your fridge can crack or loosen, allowing water to seep out.
  • Washing machines: Faulty valves or a cracked supply hose can cause the washer to keep drawing water. Older machines also use more water per load than newer machines.
  • Water softeners: A stuck internal valve can cause the softener to run multiple regeneration or rinse cycles, wasting gallons of water.
  • Dishwashers: Broken door gaskets, faulty water inlet valves, or clogged drains allow water to leak underneath the cabinet.

7. Underground Leaks

Two types of underground leaks cause problems:

  • Slab leak: A pipe leaking under your home is invisible. You may spot indirect signs like wet floors, warm spots on the floor, or cracks in the walls. Left unaddressed, slab leaks can threaten your home’s structural integrity.

  • Water line break: Some leaks happen in your main water service line between your property and the municipal supply. Symptoms include soggy patches in your yard, dirty tap water, or low water pressure at faucets. Repair usually involves replacing the damaged pipe section.

Both situations need professional leak locating equipment and skilled repair work.

Troubleshooting Causes of High Water Bills

Try these tips to investigate the root cause of your expensive water bills and determine the best solution:

Test Your Water Meter

This simple test reveals whether there’s a leak somewhere in your system:

  • Turn off all water: Shut off every faucet, appliance, and fixture inside and outside your home or building.

  • Locate your meter: Most meters sit in the ground near the curb at the front of your property.

  • Open the meter: Remove the lid and set it aside. Check for bugs or small animals that sometimes nest inside.

  • Observe the dial: Some meters have a red or blue, triangular leak detection dial. A spinning dial means you have an active leak. No indicator dial? Check the flow-rate display to see if the reading shows water usage.

  • Check again: Take a meter reading, wait a few hours without using any water, and check again. A changed reading signals a leak.

The leak could be indoors or outdoors. For an accurate diagnosis, call your trusted local plumber.

Check Toilets

Start with the dye test to find silent tank leaks. Add 10-15 drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. Wait 30 minutes without flushing, then check the toilet bowl. If the water changed color, there’s a leak inside the tank. Next, remove the tank lid and flush, watching the flapper. If it fails to seal or appears cracked, warped, or damaged, replace it.

Inspect the toilet base for external leaks caused by a failing wax ring, loose bolts, or cracks. You can also listen for strange noises. Hissing, trickling, or refilling sounds are telltale signs that something’s wrong.

Look for Leak Signs

Besides increased water costs, these signs indicate a leak somewhere in or around your home:

  • Discolored water stains on ceilings, walls, or floors

  • Musty odors or mold

  • Discolored or peeling paint

  • Running water, hissing or bubbling sounds

  • Warped or buckled flooring

  • Damaged or faulty sprinkler systems

  • Green or soggy lawn patches on the lawn

  • Water pooling near the foundation

Arrange Professional Leak Detection

High water bills with no visible leak can be challenging to diagnose yourself. Experienced plumbers know where to look and will use specialized detection equipment to find hidden leaks. Acoustic sensors listen for water flow, thermal imaging reveals temperature differences, and moisture analyzers measure water content behind surfaces. These noninvasive tools locate the leak without the need for digging up your property.
