What Can I Do to Prevent Clogged Drains?
Part II

  • June 26, 2013
  • Frequently Asked Questions, Plumbing Maintenance, Plumbing Repairs

Clogged Drains Never Happen at
a Convenient Time!

What Can I Do About a Outside Sewer Line Blockage?

Homeowners are responsible for all clogged drains in the sewer line between the house and the connection at the city or utility provider’s main line.

The main culprit is tree roots, and once they’ve blocked the line, there is very little you can do. A plumbing professional can snake the line to get it as clear as possible, and then use copper sulfide products to kill the remaining vegetation. But odds are the sewer line will most likely need to be replaced.

Are caustic liquid drain openers (like Drano or Liquid Plumber) harmful to pipes?

For minor clogged drains, they’re fine, but you shouldn’t use them on a drain that is completely clogged.

These products contain caustic ingredients, and if trapped in your pipes, they may severely damage them. Never use caustic drain openers in a drain that has a garbage disposal attached. It will begin rust and deterioration of your garbage disposal almost immediately.

If needed and you can’t use a plumber’s snake on the clogged drain yourself, we recommend that you contact a professional to do it correctly for you.
