What Can I Do to Prevent Clogged Drains?
Part I

  • June 12, 2013
  • Frequently Asked Questions, Plumbing Maintenance, Plumbing Repairs

Clogged Drains Never Happen at
a Convenient Time!

How Can I Prevent Clogged Drains in My Kitchen?

To prevent clogged drains at your house, do not rinse fats or cooking oils down the kitchen sink.

Liquid fats solidify in the cold pipes and create clogs.

What Causes My Bathroom and Washing Machine Drains to Backup?

In some homes, a bathroom and laundry drain lines are connected if they are closely situated. When the lint from the washer drain meets the buildup from soap, hair and sometimes mud from outside, at times it can result in a solid substance and create near concrete-type clogged drains.

Use of filters and strainers will help immensely to catch most of the common debris. It may still be necessary to get the drains snaked periodically to prevent serious damage.

Why Do Toilets Get Clogged Drains and Backup?

Toilet drain lines are normally the largest sewer lines under your home’s flooring or slab and are tied into the main sewer drain line. The bathroom lavatory(ies), tub and shower drain lines are usually about 1/3 the size of the main sewer line under your home. These drains are almost always tied into the large toilet drain line. Sometimes the smaller lines can contribute to the problem of a backup, but that’s usually not the case.

Toilet drains take the solid waste into that drain line. However, just as with other drain lines under fixtures such as tubs and lavatories, a drain pipe configuration known as a “P Trap” is usually where the problem exists. However, with out that “P Trap” harmful sewer gas would be unbearable. Unlike the “P Traps” under sinks and lavatories, the ones under a tub, shower or toilet cannot be easily removed, cleaned out and replaced.

Sometimes it can be the combination of several factors that can create problems with toilets:

  • Mixture of waste and bathroom tissue,
  • Foreign objects (toys, magazines, etc. – and yes, these things happen to most families over time),
  • Not adjusting the correct amount of water needed to clear waste through “P Trap”, and
  • Malfunctioning Toilets – unfortunately some of the earlier “Water Saver” Toilets, designs were still being developed. Most of the more recent models have been revised to correct deficiencies or problems that surfaced.

Many times clogged drains in these plumbing fixtures will require an experienced plumber with the proper tools to clear the blockage.
